- Mid-grit resin polishing pad for the refinement stage on detail work — 400 grit sits in the middle of the resin polishing sequence, used after coarser resin pads (50, 100, 200) have removed the metal-bond scratch pattern and started building the surface refinement. Begins to develop visible sheen and prepares the surface for the final gloss-building steps. The 3" size is the standard format for detail polishing, countertop edges, stair nosings, integral coves, and any work too small or precise for a 5" or 7" pad.

- Compact 3" diameter for the tightest detail areas — the 3" footprint is engineered for spots where even a 5" pad can't reach: tight inside corners, narrow recessed bands, around plumbing penetrations, on countertop edges and bullnoses, and on stair treads. At 400 grit specifically, this is where countertop edges and detail areas start to take on visible sheen — operator control matters more than at coarser grits because any uneven pressure shows in the gloss.

- Wet/Dry resin-bonded construction — diamonds are bonded in a resin matrix that wears progressively to keep fresh cutting points exposed. Usable wet or dry: wet polishing reduces heat and extends pad life, dry polishing is more convenient for small detail work without water access.

- Requires a 3" backing pad with hook-and-loop attachment — the standard mount is a 5/8"-11 threaded backer for hand polishers, or an M14 backer for grinders with metric spindles. The backer's diameter must match the pad's diameter — never run a 3" pad on a 4" or 5" backer (exposed hook-and-loop at high RPM is a safety hazard). Most variable-speed hand polishers run 3" pads optimally in the 1,500–3,000 RPM range.

- The revitalization step for worn polished details — per industry guidance, 400 grit is also the recommended starting point when restoring scuffed or worn polished surfaces that don't need full re-grinding. On a 3" pad specifically, this is the go-to grit for cleaning up countertop edge polish or stair-front gloss that's degraded faster than the main surface — the pad cuts enough to remove scuffs and surface haze without dropping back to coarser steps.
